Background & Aim: Kindergartens are considered a safe place to raise children and play an important role in providing a healthy and bracing life and treating normal people. This study was conducted to investigate the environmental health and safety status of kindergartens in Torbat Heydariyeh and rural kindergartens in Zaveh in 2015.
Methods: This study is a cross sectional/descriptive study conducted on all kindergartens in Torbat Heydariyeh and rural area of Zaveh in 2015-2016 through convenience sampling. To collect data, the designed checklist approved by the ministry of health was filled through interview and observation. This checklist contains 5 different sections including, personal health, building health, instruments and tools health, safety and environmental health. Data analyzed using Excel 2007.
Results: The findings show that kindergartens in Torbat Heydariyeh are in suitable level in these items: Individual health (60%), health care (55.5%), health and safety equipment (74.33%), environmental health (80.85%), and health safety (79.28%). However, rural kindergartens are in suitable level in the following items: medical examination card (93.1%), lavatory (96.6%), smoking status (100%), solid waste management (60%), wastewater management (79.3%), safe and fit seats (90%), floor covering of toddlers section (62.1%), fire extinguisher capsule (100%), first aid kit (90%), plugs of wall outlets (80%), floor of building (93.1%), air ventilation (75%), natural lighting (80%), whereas floor covering of children's playground (3.4%), safe toys and play tools (24.1%) and educational certificate (0%) were in unsuitable level.
Conclusion: This study showed that the overall health condition of kindergartens in the city of Torbat Heydariyeh is almost desirable, but far from ideal condition. In rural kindergartens, the obtained results show that the most problem is related to building health. However, in most kindergartens, health condition was in accordance with items of approved checklist.
